1. Introduction

Version followed: the home-study Gateway Experience audio series as it is sold today by Hemi-Sync (Interstate Industries, Inc.) and the Monroe Institute (TMI): eight progressive albums ("Waves"), with most detail given for Wave I – Discovery and its Guidance Manual. The Guidance Manual's "Recommendations for Use" and warnings are given as reported in a secondary write-up, not checked against the manual itself [uncertain]. TMI's residential programme (Gateway Voyage) is not described here. Every clinical use below is an adaptation and is marked [synthesis].

What it is. The Gateway Experience is not a psychotherapy. It is a self-development and consciousness-exploration training programme made of guided audio exercises voiced by Robert A. Monroe. In its own words it is a collection of guided meditations, visualisations and affirmations [source: Hemi-Sync Gateway intro page]. The Wave I warnings state plainly that it is self-exploration and personal-development training, and not psychotherapy, religion or medical diagnosis or treatment [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post, reproducing the Guidance Manual; uncertain]. It belongs to a wider tradition, the Monroe Institute, which teaches residential programmes and sells Hemi-Sync audio. The tradition began with Robert Monroe's account of an out-of-body experience in 1958 and his 1971 book, which popularised the term "OOBE" [source: CHIP.pl 2025].

Core idea of change (TMI's own theory, not established fact). Hemi-Sync plays a slightly different tone into each ear (a binaural-beat technique). TMI says this synchronises the two brain hemispheres and guides the listener into named states, the "Focus levels" [source: CHIP.pl 2025; Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. The first target state is Focus 10, "Mind Awake/Body Asleep" [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. Inside these states, "mental tools" are meant to release fear and emotion, focus intention, and widen awareness [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page; TMI Resonant Tuning page]. TMI's own claims go further: perception beyond the physical senses, states outside time, and out-of-body exploration. These are TMI's theory and must be presented to clients as such.

The 1983 "Gateway Process" report. Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell wrote Analysis and Assessment of Gateway Process (9 June 1983) for the US Army. It was later released by the CIA through FOIA in the STARGATE collection [source: Black Vault page]. The report explains Gateway using biomedical models, quantum mechanics and holographic-universe theory [source: Black Vault page; CHIP.pl 2025]. Treat it as an attributed historical document, not as evidence that the method works. One journalistic summary reports that only about 5% of participants reached Focus 15 or 21 after seven days of training, and that McDonnell himself doubted information obtained in out-of-body states [source: CHIP.pl 2025; uncertain: secondary, unverified]. The report spread widely on social media around 2023–2025, often with readings its text does not support, such as claims of proof of reincarnation [source: CHIP.pl 2025].

Regulatory status. It is sold as consumer audio. The sources used show no medical-device clearance or clinical regulation [uncertain]. A third-party Gateway app states that it is not a medical device [source: Graverholt tutorial].

2. Framework

Structure. There are eight albums, called "Waves of Change". Each has 6–8 exercises. They are progressive and "must be used sequentially" [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page; Orientation page; TMI Waves I–VIII page]. A Guidance Manual comes with each Wave [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page].

Wave I session order (six tracks): Orientation (introduction and Focus 3; 33 minutes); Intro Focus 10; Advanced Focus 10; Release and Recharge; Exploration, Sleep; Focus 10 Free Flow [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page; Orientation page].

Session format. One person listens alone on stereo headphones for about 30–45 minutes, lying down or sitting with the head supported, in a dark, quiet room [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post; uncertain]. Each exercise follows the same opening sequence: Energy Conversion Box, Gateway Affirmation, Resonant Tuning, and from Focus 10 onward the REBAL. The exercise proper comes next, followed by a guided count back to waking consciousness ("C-1") [source: Inquisitive Society posts; Graverholt tutorial].

Moving between phases. The official criteria are only that the albums are used in order [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. Release and Recharge should be attempted only once the listener is fully comfortable with the first three exercises [source: Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post]. A third-party guide advises repeating each exercise 2–3 times, practising daily or every other day, and repeating without pressure if a session seems not to work [source: Graverholt tutorial; not TMI].

Clinical session structure [synthesis, not from TMI]:

  • Screening session.
  • Optional in-office Orientation, with a debrief.
  • Home practice of one track at a time.
  • Review of the journal at each therapy session.
  • Move on only when the client returns to C-1 reliably and comfortably and reports no adverse effects.

For most clinical purposes, stop at Wave I (relaxation, containment, release of fear).

3. Guiding principles

  • Self-exploration, not treatment [source: Guidance Manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]. Do not present it to the client as therapy. In your notes, record it as a relaxation or imagery adjunct.
  • The listener stays in control [source: same]. TMI states that there are no subliminal messages and that the listener can return at any time. Teach how to return before the first use.
  • Progressive, in sequence [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. Never start a client on later Waves (Focus 12 and beyond).
  • Personal responsibility [source: Guidance Manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]. The manual makes the trainee responsible for how they apply what they experience. In therapy, the clinician shares that responsibility and debriefs.
  • Stop if there is discomfort [source: same]. If unusual physical or mental discomfort appears, stop at once. Make this an explicit agreement with the client.
  • The tools are flexible and personal [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post]. The client chooses the box's form, the pitch of the tuning, and the wording of the affirmation. Invite them to adapt.
  • Non-striving [source: Graverholt tutorial; Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post]. Repeat without pressure, and expect many attempts. Normalise sessions where nothing happens.
  • Record everything [source: Guidance Manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]. Journal every session.
  • Attribute the metaphysics [synthesis]. Energy bodies, perception beyond the senses, Focus levels beyond time and OBEs are TMI's theory. Explore what the client experiences and what it means to them. Do not confirm these claims as fact.
  • Screen first [source: Guidance Manual via Inquisitive Society; synthesis for additions]. Ask about seizures, hearing problems and mental health before any use (see Section 5).

4. Intervention inventory

The recordings deliver every exercise. The therapist's job is to screen, prepare, assign tracks and debrief, not to voice the exercises. Track wording belongs to Hemi-Sync and is not reproduced here. All example language is the author's own (illustrative). Where a step comes from a secondary account of the Guidance Manual, it is tagged that way.

4.1 Preparation and setting ("Recommendations for Use")

  • Purpose: Remove interference and keep the listener safe. Use before every session.
  • Steps [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post, reproducing the manual; uncertain]:
    1. Choose a dark, distraction-free room and allow 30–45 minutes.
    2. Use stereo headphones. Speakers cannot produce the binaural effect [source: Graverholt tutorial].
    3. Set the volume so the words are barely audible, so that the voice does not startle after silences.
    4. Wait at least one hour after eating. Avoid alcohol, drugs and excess caffeine.
    5. Use the toilet first. Loosen clothing. Remove shoes, glasses and contact lenses.
    6. Lie down or sit with the head supported. Scratching an itch is fine.
    7. Keep a loose blanket nearby, because sensations of temperature, motion or pressure can occur.
    8. Never listen while driving or operating machinery, or together with other devices that affect brain-wave activity.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Before you press play, let's check the room, the volume and how you'll stop if you need to."
  • Watch for: volume set too high (startle), drowsiness that ends in sleep, listening in unsafe places.

4.2 Orientation and Focus 3

  • Purpose: Introduce the Hemi-Sync process, the basic tools, and Focus 3, the first "signpost". The track presents Focus 3 as a state of greater coherence and balance [source: Orientation page; Inquisitive Society Wave I post]. Use as the first exercise, and ideally do it once in the office.
  • Steps:
    1. The client completes the preparation in 4.1.
    2. The client follows the track, which introduces the Energy Conversion Box, Affirmation, Resonant Tuning and the energy breathing (4.3–4.6), then Focus 3.
    3. The track includes cues to open and close the eyes. The write-up presents this as a first exercise in controlling automatic behaviour.
    4. A strong audio signal at the end guides the return to C-1 (4.12) [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post].
  • Example language (illustrative): "The first track is mostly about learning the tools. Don't aim for anything dramatic."
  • Watch for: whether the client can follow cues and come back fully. Debrief the body sensations they noticed.

4.3 Energy Conversion Box

  • Purpose: An imagery container in which concerns and distractions are set aside before the exercise. It is opened again in Release and Recharge [source: Orientation page; Graverholt tutorial; Inquisitive Society posts].
  • Steps (paraphrased from the Inquisitive Society Wave I post):
    1. Imagine a container of any form you choose.
    2. Put into it symbols of current concerns: an object standing for a worry, a person on your mind, limiting words, defensive walls, work items.
    3. Return to the box at any point to add new distractions. Its form may change over time.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Picture a box that is strong enough and yours. What goes in today? You can get these things back afterwards."
  • Watch for: clients who use the box to avoid material that needs work in therapy. Ask "what went in?" and treat the answer as clinical information [synthesis]. Distress at putting something in may mean the material is not yet contained [synthesis].

4.4 Gateway Affirmation

  • Purpose: Focus intention and attention at the start of each session [source: Orientation page; Inquisitive Society Wave I post].
  • Content (summarised, not quoted): The listener affirms that they are more than the physical body, intends to expand, experience, understand and use beneficial energies for themselves and those close to them, and asks for help and guidance from those whose wisdom equals or exceeds their own. This is TMI's metaphysical framing [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post].
  • Steps: Repeat it with the track, adapt it, or use your own words [source: same].
  • Example language (illustrative): "Some people keep the wording. Others make it their own, for example 'I intend to rest and learn what I need.' Which fits you?"
  • Watch for: religious or values conflict with the "more than the physical body" and "guidance" clauses. Offer a secular rewording [synthesis].

4.5 Resonant Tuning

  • Purpose: A breath-and-sound exercise. TMI says it moves and balances energy, quiets the mind, raises energy, supports deep meditative states, and focuses intention (TMI's claims) [source: TMI Resonant Tuning page]. It is done when the chanting on the track begins [source: Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post].
  • Steps [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post]:
    1. Vocalise aloud along with the recorded chanting.
    2. Notice body sensations.
    3. Set your own rhythm and pace. Move up and down the scale and try different vowels. The recording is only a guide.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Let your voice find its own note. Notice where you feel the sound."
  • Watch for: light-headedness from over-breathing. Slow down and breathe normally [synthesis]. Self-consciousness about making sound at home is an ordinary barrier.

4.6 Energy breathing (Orientation)

  • Purpose: Paired breath and imagery used during the opening [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post].
  • Steps: Breathe slightly deeper than usual. On the in-breath, imagine bright energy moving through the body and head. Hold briefly. On the out-breath, imagine stale energy leaving through the soles of the feet [source: same].
  • Example language (illustrative): "Slightly fuller than normal, not forced."
  • Watch for: tingling or dizziness. Return to ordinary breathing [synthesis].

4.7 REBAL (Resonant Energy Balloon)

  • Purpose: A protective energy visualisation, in TMI's terms. Listeners "pop" it after Resonant Tuning, before the affirmation and before moving to Focus 10 [source: Graverholt tutorial; Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post].
  • Steps: No published step-by-step description is available in the sources used [uncertain]. Follow the track's instructions and do not improvise a version attributed to TMI.
  • Example language (illustrative): "What does the balloon feel like for you? Does it add to your sense of safety?"
  • Watch for: reliance on "energy protection" in place of real-world safety planning in clients with paranoid or magical thinking [synthesis].

4.8 Intro Focus 10 ("Mind Awake/Body Asleep")

  • Purpose: To reach a state of deep physical relaxation with alert awareness. This is the base state for all of Wave I [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page; Graverholt tutorial]. Use it after Orientation is comfortable.
  • Steps:
    1. Complete the preparatory sequence: box, affirmation, Resonant Tuning, REBAL.
    2. The track guides the move into Focus 10.
    3. Stay in the state, then return to C-1 on the guided signal. The induction itself (the count or cue sequence) is not described in the sources used [uncertain]. Rely on the recording.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Notice your body getting heavy while your mind stays clear. If you drift into sleep, that's information too."
  • Watch for: falling asleep, which is common and harmless (debrief and change the time of day) [synthesis]. Also watch for sensations of heaviness, numbness, vibration or floating. Normalise these. The manual warns that temperature, motion and pressure sensations can occur [source: manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]. A client who becomes frightened by them should stop and ground (see Section 5).

4.9 Advanced Focus 10

  • Purpose: To widen perception and build control of what TMI calls personal energy (TMI's framing) [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page].
  • Steps: Follow the track. No published step-by-step description is available [uncertain].
  • Example language (illustrative): "What did you notice that was different from the first Focus 10 track?"
  • Watch for: the same signs as 4.8. Be ready if detachment from the body turns into depersonalisation (Section 5).

4.10 Release and Recharge

  • Purpose: To let go of fears and the emotions bound to them, and to take back the "clean energy" beneath them (TMI's framing). The source frames this as releasing old fears and negative emotions [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. One secondary account frames it as banishing "traumatic events" [source: Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post]. Prerequisite: the client is fully comfortable with tracks 1–3. The account says it can then be done daily in Focus 10, with or without the recording [source: same].
  • Steps (paraphrased from the Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post):
    1. Do the preparatory process: box, Resonant Tuning, REBAL, affirmation, then Focus 10.
    2. Open the Energy Conversion Box and notice the first fear that appears.
    3. Let it float up and away, like a bubble rising in water.
    4. Notice the emotion the fear was covering, and release it the same way.
    5. Notice the "clean energy" left beneath and draw it back in. The account describes this as becoming aware of the memory or event that had been covered.
    6. Repeat steps 2–5 twice more.
    7. Close the box, rest in Focus 10, and return to C-1. If nothing comes up, release the "nothing" and still draw the energy back in. Expect many attempts.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Take only what comes up first, and let it rise at whatever speed feels safe. You can close the box at any time."
  • Watch for (risk): This is the Wave I exercise most likely to bring up traumatic memories, and the step that "perceives the memory" can trigger re-experiencing. The source offers no guidance on trauma and no referral advice [source: Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post]. Do not assign it to clients with unprocessed trauma, dissociative disorders or unstabilised PTSD. Assign it only after stabilisation, and debrief in session [synthesis]. Signs it is working: lower distress about the named fear, and some new understanding of it that is tolerable [synthesis].

4.11 Exploration, Sleep

  • Purpose: Techniques for widening awareness and exploring during sleep (TMI's framing) [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page].
  • Steps: no published description [uncertain]. Use the recording only.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Let's keep track of how your sleep goes the week you try this."
  • Watch for: disturbed sleep, sleep paralysis, or frightening hypnagogic experiences [synthesis]. Stop the track if sleep quality worsens [synthesis].

4.12 Return to C-1 (waking consciousness)

  • Purpose: To return safely and fully. This is the client's main safety skill.
  • Steps [source: Inquisitive Society Wave I post]: The listener can return at any time by breathing normally, opening the eyes, or moving the fingers of the right hand. At the end of each exercise, a strong audio signal guides the return. Stay with it until it fades, because a full return prepares for the next exercise.
  • Example language (illustrative): "Show me how you'd come back right now if you needed to. Good. That works on every track."
  • Watch for: grogginess or a sense of unreality afterwards. Add grounding: stand, drink water, name five things you can see [synthesis]. No driving until fully alert [synthesis].

4.13 Focus 10 Free Flow

  • Purpose: Unguided practice with all the Wave I tools [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. Use it at the end of Wave I.
  • Steps: Follow the track. Choose one tool and one intention beforehand [synthesis].
  • Example language (illustrative): "Pick one thing to practise, and leave the rest."
  • Watch for: a free-flow session that wanders into distressing material. Agree beforehand which tools the client will use [synthesis].

4.14 Journaling

  • Purpose: To track experience across sessions [source: manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain].
  • Steps: After each session, record the date and time, body position, any medication or unusual diet, mood, energy level and other unusual circumstances. The manual also lists moon phase (a TMI convention) [source: same]. Clinical addition: rate distress from 0–10 before and after, note sleep the following night, and note any intrusions [synthesis].
  • Example language (illustrative): "Bring the journal and we'll look for patterns."
  • Watch for: rising distress scores, or entries that show more and more preoccupation [synthesis].

4.15 Later-Wave tools (named in sources; not recommended for clinical assignment)

  • Focus 12 (expanded awareness, Wave II). Wave II titles include Problem Solving and One Month Patterning [source: CHIP.pl 2025; Graverholt tutorial; search listings]. Patterning is a Wave IV intention-setting tool [source: Graverholt tutorial].
  • Focus 15 (said to be beyond time, or travel to the past), Focus 21 ("edge of time-space", or the future), and Focus 23–27 ("belief system territories", a "Reception Center") [source: CHIP.pl 2025; Graverholt tutorial]. Waves III and VI include energy-body "separation" and "point of departure" exercises aimed at out-of-body experience (TMI's own theory of OBE) [source: Graverholt tutorial; uncertain].
  • Colour Breathing, Energy Bar Tool, Living Body Map are named by a third-party source without description [source: Graverholt tutorial; uncertain]. The sources used give no steps, so none are given.
  • Clinical stance [synthesis]: Do not assign these tracks therapeutically. If a client uses them on their own, use the integration approach in 4.17.

4.16 Clinical adjunct: Hemi-Sync audio for relaxation and imagery [synthesis]

  • Purpose: Using Wave I (Orientation, Intro Focus 10) as a home-practice relaxation and containment aid for adults who are screened, stable and interested.
  • Steps:
    1. Screen (Section 5).
    2. Get informed consent. Cover TMI's claims compared with what is established, the cost, the possible effects, and how to stop.
    3. Run Orientation in the office, or review it after the client listens.
    4. Assign one track for 2–3 sessions a week, with the journal.
    5. Review the journal at each session and move on only as described in Section 2.
  • Example language (illustrative): "The Institute has its own ideas about what these states are. We'll use it simply as a relaxation exercise and look at what you notice."
  • Watch for: adverse effects, avoidance, and spending or preoccupation.

4.17 Harm-reduction and integration support for clients using Gateway on their own [synthesis]

  • Purpose: Many clients come to Gateway through viral "CIA Gateway Process" content [source: CHIP.pl 2025]. The clinician's role is assessment, education and integration.
  • Steps:
    1. Ask which Wave and track, how often, the setting, and any other substance or device use.
    2. Check the manual's warnings with the client: seizures, hearing problems, mental-health conditions, driving [source: manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain].
    3. Correct misreadings without ridicule. The 1983 report is an Army analyst's attributed assessment, not proof of OBE or reincarnation [source: CHIP.pl 2025; Black Vault page].
    4. Explore what the experiences mean to the client and how they affect daily functioning.
    5. Agree limits (no late-night marathons, stop if sleep or mood worsens), or a pause.
  • Example language (illustrative): "What has the practice been like for you? What do you make of what happens?"
  • Watch for: sleep loss, derealisation, fear of "not coming back", and beliefs about energy attacks or contact with entities that are growing more fixed or distressing. These may need psychiatric assessment.

5. Handling problems

Screening and contraindications

  • Named in the manual [source: Guidance Manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]:
    • Consult a physician before use if there is a tendency to seizures, an auditory disorder, or an "adverse mental condition".
    • Do not use while driving or operating machinery.
    • Do not use with other devices that affect brain-wave activity.
    • Stop immediately if unusual physical or mental discomfort appears.
    • Avoid alcohol, drugs and excess caffeine, and wait an hour after eating.
  • Named by a third-party Gateway app [source: Graverholt tutorial]: epilepsy or seizure disorders (consult a doctor before binaural or photic use). Any version with flashing light needs screening for photosensitivity. Keep the eyes closed and never stare at flashing lights.
  • Added clinical screening [synthesis]:
    • Current or past psychosis, or bipolar disorder with recent mania.
    • Dissociative disorders, or prominent depersonalisation or derealisation.
    • PTSD or complex trauma without stabilisation (especially before Release and Recharge).
    • Severe depression with suicidal ideation (long solitary sessions in the dark; follow standard risk assessment).
    • Tinnitus or hyperacusis (volume).
    • Sleep disorders (Exploration, Sleep).
    • Substance use.
    • Strong religious objection to the metaphysical framing.
    • Minors (no published youth guidance [uncertain]).

Documented and plausible adverse effects

  • Documented in the sources used: sensations of temperature, motion or pressure on entering an exercise, and the possibility of "unusual physical or mental discomfort" [source: manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain].
  • Research data: No peer-reviewed adverse-event data on Hemi-Sync or Gateway is cited here [uncertain].
  • Expect by analogy with meditation and deep-relaxation adverse effects [synthesis]: anxiety or panic, depersonalisation or derealisation, re-experiencing trauma, sleep disruption and frightening hypnagogic states, and in vulnerable people, unusual beliefs that become more fixed.
  • Response [synthesis]:
    1. Stop the track.
    2. Ground the client: eyes open, feet on the floor, orient to the room, ordinary breathing.
    3. Debrief the experience without escalating its meaning.
    4. Pause practice.
    5. Reassess and refer for psychiatric review if psychotic or manic symptoms appear.

Common difficulties

  • Falls asleep / "nothing happens." The sources say to repeat without pressure and that many attempts may be needed [source: Graverholt tutorial; Inquisitive Society Release and Recharge post]. Try a different time of day, sitting rather than lying down, and an earlier session [synthesis].
  • Frightened by body sensations (vibration, floating, heaviness). The manual warns of these sensations [source: manual via Inquisitive Society; uncertain]. Rehearse returning to C-1. Normalise the sensations as known relaxation phenomena, without endorsing OBE interpretations. If the fear persists, stay with Orientation or stop [synthesis].
  • Overwhelm during Release and Recharge. Close the box, return to C-1, and ground. Go back to stabilisation work. Process the memory in therapy, not on the recording [synthesis].
  • Resistance to the metaphysics, or a religious conflict. Offer secular wording for the affirmation (4.4) and present the tracks as relaxation. If that is not acceptable, use a non-Hemi-Sync relaxation method [synthesis].
  • Over-investment (pursuing OBE or remote viewing, CIA mythology, hours of daily listening, high spending: the full set is listed at about $944 [source: TMI Waves I–VIII page]). Explore the function of the practice, such as escape, specialness, or a search for proof. Set limits. Watch for functional decline [synthesis].
  • Non-adherence. Reduce to one short track a week, and link practice to a goal the client chose [synthesis].
  • Rupture: the client feels the therapist dismisses their experiences. Separate the experience (valid and explorable) from the explanation (TMI's theory), and repair explicitly [synthesis].
  • Skipping Waves. The albums "must be used sequentially" [source: Hemi-Sync Wave I page]. Advise returning to Wave I [synthesis].

Professional and ethical points [synthesis]

  • Practise within your licence and document it as an adjunct.
  • Do not claim clinical efficacy.
  • Disclose any financial or affiliate relationship with TMI or Hemi-Sync.
  • Do not sell recordings to clients.
  • Use only licensed copies. Pirated "cracked" uploads are common online.
