Domain synthesis

A defining feature of this domain is that most of its guides open by insisting they do not describe a therapy. Hermeticism "is a historical current, not a therapy" XIV-001; the same disclaimer heads the alchemy, Freemasonry, Spiritualism, divination, manifestation and large-group-training entries XIV-012 XIV-030 XIV-094 XIV-192 XIV-089 XIV-225. The clinical material is almost always the psychotherapist's work around a client's practice, not the practice itself. "Healing" and "the self" below are therefore mostly the traditions' own claims, described as the introductions attribute them.

What "healing" means here

Several incompatible conceptions sit side by side. In the ancient and late-antique family, change is gnosis — a saving knowledge of the soul's origin and return that liberates (Hermeticism, the Gnostic texts, Manichaeism) XIV-001 XIV-004 XIV-005, or the soul's ascent and union with a first principle, the One or the divine, reached by purification and contemplation (Neoplatonism, theurgy, Bruno's memory art) XIV-002 XIV-003 XIV-016. A second family treats healing as the restoration or balance of a subtle fluid or energy: Mesmer's magnetic fluid, Puységur's "Nature", Antoinism's Kardecian fluide, and the channelled "light" of Johrei and Mahikari XIV-081 XIV-082 XIV-119 XIV-120 XIV-121. A third, the Anglo-American mind-cure lineage, holds that illness follows mistaken thought and that correcting belief heals: Quimby's "my explanation is the cure," New Thought affirmative prayer, Christian Science, Louise Hay and the law of attraction XIV-084 XIV-085 XIV-086 XIV-091 XIV-089. A fourth frames change as spiritual evolution — raising one's "vibration" or ascending to "5D" consciousness (lightworker, starseed and ascension currents) XIV-145 XIV-146 XIV-150. Spiritualism and Spiritism locate healing in restored relationship with the dead and moral progress across lives XIV-094 XIV-100, while the human-potential trainings promise a sudden cognitive-emotional reframe or "breakthrough" in which the person takes authorship of their experience XIV-225 XIV-234 XIV-241. The sharpest tension runs between literal and psychological readings of the same material — operative versus "spiritual"/Jungian alchemy XIV-012, and past-life regression taken as memory versus projective imagination XIV-113 — and many introductions append an "evidence status" line noting no controlled support for the healing claims XIV-084 XIV-101.

What "the self" or "the person" is here

The commonest image is a soul that pre-exists the body, survives death and often reincarnates: "essentially souls using bodies" in Neoplatonism, Pythagorean metempsychosis, Spiritist moral progress, Eckankar's "Soul," Theosophical and Martinus cosmologies XIV-002 XIV-007 XIV-100 XIV-064 XIV-055. Many currents add a layered subtle anatomy — Huna's three selves, the chakra ladder of Western chakra psychology, the Merkaba "lightbody," the pineal "third eye" XIV-187 XIV-218 XIV-219 XIV-148. A divine-spark motif recurs: the "I AM Presence," the Damanhurian divine spark, the person as an individualised fragment of God XIV-059 XIV-070. Against these, the non-dual and guru currents treat the separate self as unreal or as a "self-contraction" to be dissolved (neo-Advaita, Tolle, Adidam, Byron Katie's inquiry) XIV-252 XIV-253 XIV-072 XIV-241. The human-potential trainings recast the person as "source" or author of their reality XIV-234 XIV-226, the constellations method as a node entangled in a trans-generational family system XIV-248, and the typologies (Enneagram, MBTI, Human Design, socionics, Gene Keys) as an instance of a fixed pattern or "type" XIV-209 XIV-214 XIV-211 XIV-215 XIV-212. Starseed belief extends the soul's origin to other star systems XIV-146 XIV-151.

Mechanisms of change the domain names

Grouped, the stated mechanisms are: (1) gnosis / remembering a true or immortal identity — the ancient paths, chaos magic's "gnosis," and Newton-style life-between-lives recall XIV-001 XIV-043 XIV-114; (2) ritual, initiation and sacrament, held to connect the soul to higher powers where thought alone cannot (theurgy, the mystery initiations, Wicca, the Rectified Scottish Rite; grace through the sacraments in the Liberal Catholic Church) XIV-003 XIV-006 XIV-165 XIV-024 XIV-052; (3) energy transmission or balance — fluid, mana, light, qi, darshan and group "transmission" XIV-081 XIV-120 XIV-058 XIV-076; (4) altered states induced by trance, drumming, breath or hypnosis (core shamanism's "sonic driving," channelling, regression methods) XIV-180 XIV-108 XIV-115; (5) suggestion, affirmation and belief-change (New Thought, Hay, affirmative prayer, the 369 and scripting methods) XIV-085 XIV-092 XIV-154 XIV-155; (6) catharsis, confrontation and breakthrough in intensive groups XIV-225 XIV-232 XIV-239; (7) devotional surrender and grace toward a guru or avatar XIV-072 XIV-075; and (8) correspondence and sympathy — the microcosm-macrocosm bond and "as above, so below" of Ficino, Agrippa, Paracelsus and Swedenborg's correspondences XIV-013 XIV-015 XIV-017 XIV-022.

Shared techniques

Every technique family in the atlas appears, often in "public outline only" because the guides withhold initiatory procedures XIV-008 XIV-033 XIV-217. Breath and movement: active meditations, Kundalini yoga, curative eurythmy, paneurhythmy, the firewalk XIV-216 XIV-074 XIV-053 XIV-025 XIV-238. Attention and meditation: Gurdjieffian self-observation, present-moment awareness, self-inquiry and partnered "dyad" contemplation XIV-061 XIV-253 XIV-242. Imagery: pathworking and guided visualisation XIV-033 XIV-115 XIV-233. Ritual: Mass-like liturgies, fire rites, consecration XIV-045 XIV-125. Relationship as method: satsang, Circling, women's and men's circles XIV-252 XIV-250 XIV-247 XIV-245. Touch and laying-on of hands versus deliberately touch-free "light" (the passe; palm-raising Johrei) XIV-100 XIV-120. Voice and sound: mantra, chanting, "light language," number codes XIV-147 XIV-156. Story and word: myth, scripting, automatic writing XIV-011 XIV-155 XIV-106. Graded practice and exposure: correspondence lessons and daily discipline XIV-037 XIV-057. Group and community: Spiritualist camps, communes, large-group trainings XIV-095 XIV-225. A technique set almost unique to this domain is divination — cards, runes, the I Ching, scrying, lots, geomancy — which the clinical guides reframe as reflective or projective material XIV-192 XIV-196 XIV-195 XIV-202 XIV-205 XIV-197.

Developmental or stage models

Graded ascent is pervasive. Neoplatonism sets practice of virtues → Intellect → the One XIV-002; the mysteries and the fraternal orders run degree ladders (Mithras's seven grades; Masonic and Golden Dawn grades; OTO and neo-druid Bard/Ovate/Druid tiers) XIV-006 XIV-030 XIV-171. Alchemy's colour stages are read developmentally by Edinger XIV-012. Scientology maps progress on the "Bridge to Total Freedom" XIV-254, and the trainings build explicit course ladders — Avatar's, the ManKind Project's, Insight's XIV-234 XIV-245 XIV-228. Soul-evolution schemes stage growth across many lives or planes (Theosophy's root-races, Spiritist moral progress, the Newton "Council of Elders" between-lives) XIV-050 XIV-100 XIV-114. The typologies carry their own developmental overlays — the Enneagram's "Levels of Development," the chakra model's base-to-crown unfolding, the Gene Keys "Golden Path" sequences XIV-209 XIV-218 XIV-212.

Distinctive contribution

This domain supplies what the rest of the atlas largely lacks: systematic divination and the reading of signs (planets, cards, numbers, lots) and explicit, organised engagement with non-human intelligences — the dead, spirits, angels, "ascended masters" and extraterrestrials — through mediumship and channelling XIV-192 XIV-094 XIV-108 XIV-142. It also carries two ideas found almost nowhere else: a correspondence cosmology linking microcosm and macrocosm XIV-015 XIV-022, and the claim that thought or belief directly shapes material reality XIV-089 XIV-234. Uniquely, its clinical stance is meta-therapeutic: the practitioner works alongside a practice they neither perform nor debunk.
